(The following is extracted from the recent Herefordshire Council's 'Vote Special' Newsletter - 6th March)

All sheltered accomodation tenants have a caring warden who provides them with support, a friendly face and help when they want it.

All sheltered accomodation tenants also have access to communal facilities and social events. If transfer goes ahead Herefordshire Housing would continue to provide the warden service which is one of the most important services to elderly, disabled or vulnerable tenants.

The Council cannot afford to carry out the improvements that all sheltered schemes need, so some are at a better standard than others. if transfer goes ahead Herefordshire Housing would make sure that all tenants in sheltered accomodation have the modern standards they have a right to expect, not just in the next few years but in the long term future too.

If transfer goes ahead it would mean improvements to sheltered schemes, including:-

More regular decorating of common rooms and corridors

Better security, such as door entry systems, spy holes and door chains

More regular replacement of furniture and equipment in comon rooms

Improved access

Weather-proofing of the first floor flats in some schemes.

If you, or any of your family or friends live in Council-owned sheltered housing, then there is a residents' association you should know about. The Sheltered Housing Tenants' Umbrella Group has been in existence since the beginning of this year and it actively promotes the interests of sheltered housing residents. The Group meets on the first Thursday of each month, normally at Brierley Court at 10 am. Meetings are informal and friendly but we do have a record of getting response and action from our landlord.

If you have a problem to solve, a grievance to air, of just wish to meet others in the same situations as yourself, please contact Helen Greenway Customer Involvement & Communications Manager

E-mail: hgreenway@herefordshirehousing.org.uk or telephone 01432 384010 and let her know you would like to attend our next meeting.

YOUR WARDEN SERVICE WOULD BE SAFE

Tenants living in sheltered accomodation would still have their warden service, if the proposed housing stock transfer goes ahead.

Tony Jaques Head of Housing, said:
"Tenants have nothing to fear. The warden service would be safe if the stock transfer goes ahead. Herefordshire Housing understands how important it is to elderly tenants to know that their warden is just a call away".

Herefordshire Housing would ensure that the dedicated team of wardens would continue to provide what is one of the most important services to elderly tenants in Herefordshire.

If transfer goes ahead Herefordshire Housing would make sure that the sheltered warden service continues and that the money is there to improve the service.

Tenants in sheltered accomodation need not worry about losing the wardens they have come to know and trust. They would see the same, familiar faces if the transfer goese ahead, as their wardens would transfer over to Herefordshire Housing too.
